Free Friday: FIRST, THERE IS A RIVER by Kathy Steffen

The “Back Cover”:
An old riverboat and the colorful characters aboard it form the backdrop for this tale of a woman’s heartache and self-discovery and her crazed husband’s quest for revenge. After her children are sent away, Emma seeks solace on her uncle’s boat, where she is greeted by the kindness and companionship of a stranger. As she learns about herself and the possiblity of happiness, her husband follows close behind, determined to take his anger out on her and everyone else aboard the boat.
So for my first Free Friday selection, I decided on First, There Is a River. Every Friday I go straight to the Nook page to see what they are offering up for free. Let me tell you, I felt kinda disappointed when I read this title. Really? How boring does this one sound. So I went on about looking at all of my friends’ pictures of their kiddos on their first day of school.
About 45 minutes later, I went back to the Nook page and decided to click the link. I just couldn’t get the title out of my head and my curiosity was growing (which is no surprise to those of you who know me -know me. I ask all kinds of questions and always have random, off the wall thoughts going through my head but more about that another time lol).
So here I am staring at B & N’s page and reading the book description thinking “Naw, this one really isn’t for me.” THEN I scroll down to skim some reviews and THEN I find an excerpt. First few lines and I am hooked! I cannot wait to read this book! I am not one to read a whole lot of books set from way back when (although I do enjoy one every now and then) but I am excited to read this.
Please follow the link and at least read the excerpt. If you download it, please feel free to come back to this post and tell me in the comments what you thought. After I read it, there will of course be my review to follow but I would love to hear from my readers what they thought. Happy Friday!
