ISLAND OF LOST GIRLS by Jennifer McMahon

The Back Cover

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of McMahon’s haunting second novel (after Promise Not to Tell), recent college grad Rhonda Farr witnesses a child abduction in front of a convenience store in Pike’s Crossing, Vt. Ernestine Ernie Florucci willingly leaves her mother’s car because her six-foot-tall abductor is wearing a rabbit suit. Rhonda remembers her best friend Lizzy’s father entertaining her and Lizzy in a rabbit costume in 1993, and vanishing soon after. Three years later, Lizzy disappeared en route to high school. Guilt over her inability to stop Ernie’s abduction spurs Rhonda to join the search for the girl. She recalls the summer that Lizzy’s older brother, Peter, had them all perform Peter Pan, which was a great success, but there were dark secrets beneath the makeshift stage. McMahon expertly shifts between pivotal events in the past and present-day action, building tension to a resolution both poignant and shattering. (May)

My Thoughts

Wow! This read was amazing! I was kind of surprised at some of the negative reviews because I loved every page and finished it in just a few hours.
The story starts out in 2006. Rhonda is sitting at the only gas station in her little town filling up before heading to a job interview, when someone pulls into the station in a bunny costume and takes a little girl. Yes, I said a bunny costume. Weird, I know but as the story takes you back to 1993 you will understand. I really enjoyed trying to figure out the who-dunnit and putting the clues together…only to be surprised when the real kidnapper was revealed. As the truth starts to come out, so do plenty of dark, long kept secrets.
A captivating novel that will grip your imagination and your heart. Highly recommended. And I have to say, being as I finished this 2 days before Easter, I will never look at someone in a bunny suit the same way again! Jennifer McMahon has a new fan!

DEAD RADIANCE (Valkyrie #1) by T.G. Ayer

The Back Cover

That day I knew for sure. I’d lost control of my tears then. They fell in huge, mocking drops. I stared at Joshua through those bitter tears, my heart missing beats as I tried to remember to breathe.

I finally knew what the glow meant.

I was a freak and Joshua was going to die.

Bryn Halbrook had always seen the glow. But it is only when her best friend dies that she discovers the meaning of those beautiful golden auras — Death. Alone, lost in the foster system, she struggles to understand who she is and why she was cursed with the ability to see the soon-to-be-dead.

The new foster kid, Aidan, isn’t helping any. Mr. Perfect seems to fit in no matter what, making her feel even more pathetic. But when his affections turn to her, Bryn finds him hard to resist. Impossible actually. A mystery himself, Aidan disappears, leaving behind a broken heart and a mysterious book that suggests Bryn might not be entirely human.

Bryn stands at the threshold of a journey of discovery. Will destiny help her find herself, find her purpose and her place in a world in which she’d never belonged?

My Thoughts

First, how about that cover?? Beautiful!! Okay, on to my thoughts. I really don’t know much about mytholgy so I loved the fact that Dead Radiance is full of Valkyrie’s, Warriors, and Norse Gods.
It all began with an archaeology dig, a strange find, and a man with his own agenda for the DNA taken from the find.
When foster-child Bryn’s best friend dies in a car accident, while she is with him, Bryn becomes more of an outsider than she was before. While the snide remarks and dirty looks continue after the funeral, Bryn is feeling more alone than ever. Then the sexy Aiden moves into Bryn’s foster home, leaving Bryn more confused than ever. Out of nowhere, in the blink of an eye, Bryn is transported to a land that was only thought to exist in fairy tales. I found it odd how Bryn accepted the fact that she was in this new world, talking with gods, people have tales, and she is training for a long for-told fight. I would have been freaking out but Bryn just seems to accept it all in stride. One of her new jobs is to go back to earth and rescue those who have died and bring them back to train to fight in an upcoming battle that will determine the fate of the world. Her first rescue comes as a shock but also will bring a little bit of “home” back with her.
After being sent on a special mission, someone’s life hangs in the balance and it is up to Bryn to save the day.
I look forward to the next book in this series. Ayer has done a great job introducing us to this new Norse world and all of the characters.

THE SPIRIT KEEPER by Melissa Luznicky Garrett

The Back Cover

After her mother and grandparents die in a raging house fire, eleven-year-old Sarah Redbird ends up in the custody of her aunt and uncle. Six years later, Sarah discovers the fire may not have been an accident at all, but a deliberate act of revenge.

Sarah’s family has kept the truth of their Native American heritage secret her entire life, refusing to acknowledge where they came from. But when a family that has direct ties to their past moves to town, Sarah’s true identity is revealed.

What Sarah soon learns is that some secrets are better left unspoken.

My Thoughts

Melissa has once again written another amazing read! The Spirit Keeper is the perfect beginning to what promises to be a new favorite series. Her writing is descriptive and engaging, the characters are personable and colorful, the story line is exciting, different and leaves you wanting more. By the time you reach the last page, you feel like you have a few new friends.
I really enjoyed Sarah’s character. At 17, she has been living with her aunt and uncle after a fire took her mother and grandparents from her. Sarah has normal high school teenage issues, like bullies and those feelings of not being understood…and first loves. Thank goodness for her BFF Priscilla (who is one of my favorite characters). And what good would a YA novel be without the new hunky guy that moves in across the street? But what if that hunky guy next door brings with him a long kept secret about your family that your aunt and uncle have tried so hard to keep hidden?
I was completely caught up in this story from the very first page and each page that followed only sucked me in further. Book two can’t come fast enough. A big well done to Melissa on another excellent, captivating read!! The perfect YA read for teens and adults alike!

THE BONE BOX A Birdy Waterman Thriller by Gregg Olsen

The Back Cover

They call it the Bone Box. A collection of old cases, solved and unsolved, that continue to haunt forensic pathologist Birdy Waterman. None is more disturbing than the first. After two decades, Birdy still remembers the screaming. The blood on the boy’s hands. The body of a girl, butchered in the woods. Birdy’s testimony helped put her cousin behind bars. Now, twenty years later, she wants to reopen the box. Reexamine the evidence. And rekindle her fears that a killer walked free–and is closer than ever.

My Thoughts

I love Gregg Olson’s writing and was so excited when I pre-ordered this novella. And even more excited when I read that Doctor Birdy Waterman was getting her own time to shine! I enjoy her role in some of Gregg’s other novels so it was nice to get to see her outside of her role in the the morgue.
At 14, Birdy was called to testify in the murder trail of her cousin Tommy, after seeing him come out of the woods covered in blood. Twenty years later, Tommy is still sitting in prison, refusing to admit to something he didn’t do, even it it means getting paroled. When a letter comes in the mail, signed by Tommy, Birdy makes the trip to visit him. All Tommy wants is for Birdy to help clear his name. What Birdy finds is that people’s feelings to her haven’t changed, even after 20 years. Birdy also uncovers a long kept secret that unveils more secrets.
An excellently written who-dunnit mystery, Gregg Olsen has once again amazed me with his writing. I hope in future novels Birdy gets a little more “air time” *hint hint*😉

VERLIEGE Micheal Rivers

The Back Cover

The world of Adrian Bolt shattered as his wife lay butchered on the floor of Castle Verliege. His conviction by a German court was as swift as the sword that killed her. He maintained his silence knowing his story would not be believed. Though his reputation was impeccable there was nobody willing to stand for him.
Another world lay in wait for anyone living within the walls of the castle; waiting, watching, for eternity to keep the Mueller name upon its registers. There is only one world here for those who choose to stay. To enter its doors is an invitation you will not soon forget!

My Thoughts

Some things are better left alone. Secrets are better left buried. Sometimes greed and curiosity will cause you to loose your life, or take a life. Micheal Rivers’s Verliege is a short tale but will leave you feeling like you just finished a 300+ page novel. A spooky ghost story of a read, quite a few times I would have goosebumps all up my arms. Rivers’s writing is so descriptive you will feel like you are there, in the story, watching as every single person who walks through those castle doors has their life changed forever. This is the third book I have read by Rivers, and  is quite possibly my favorite. Fans of a good ghost story will LOVE Verliege. Don’t try to figure out the story ahead of time. Be patient and enjoy the read!

NIMPENTOAD by Henry, Joshua, and Harrison Hertz

The Back Cover

Nimpentoad is the tale of a courageous and resourceful little Nibling who leads his tribe through the perilous Grunwald forest, overcoming obstacles and encountering strange creatures along the way. Nimpentoad is an engaging story with fantastic illustrations, and positive lessons of teamwork, creativity, perseverance and leadership.

My Thoughts

Having been contacted by Henry to read and review Nimpentoad, after reading the description I gladly accepted. If I would of had a copy of Nimpentoad when I was a child, it would of been one of my favorite books. Goblins, giant wolves, Orcs, Rhinotaurs are some of the creatures the little Niblings encounter on their travels through the Grunwald Forest. They might not sound like anything to fear, unless you are a Nibling! Niblings are the smallest of creatures found in the forest, and peculiar they are. They love mushrooms, berries, and bug eggs and they are great cooks. Because they are so small, they are on their way to Goofus the Giant’s castle to ask if they can work for him in exchange for protection from the other forest creatures. After all, being the smallest creatures they get picked on and made fun of by the other forest creatures. Their path is full of adventure, bravery, and imagination, thanks to a Nibling named Nimpentoad!

A short little story with many lessons, I can’t wait to read this to my daycare children! The descriptions are so vibrant, the story is easy to imagine in your mind. Written by a father and his two elementary age sons, this tale is sure to be a favorite for young and old! Highly recommended!

The Back Cover

After the worst Christmas Eve of his life, DEA Agent T.A. Reddick leaves Miami for the magical city of Charleston, South Carolina, hoping a return to his roots will heal a broken heart and the guilt of killing a friend. The sleepy and sultry town of Charleston is filled with echoes of the Old South: genteel playboys, society debutantes, and quiet cobblestone streets. But as Reddick will soon discover, there’s danger lurking under her charming veneer. When a movie star’s death shines a national spotlight on Charleston’s underground cocaine trade, he must go undercover to find the main supplier and shut him down. As a hurricane bears down on the port city and the DEA gets ready to spring its trap, Reddick must contend with more than he ever could have imagined.

Brash and bold, TA Reddick is a hero you won’t soon forget. Lowcountry Punch is an action-packed novel that will have you on your knees begging for more.

My Thoughts

“No sir. You think I could get one of those toothpicks? Are they the cinnamon kind? I really like those.” ~ T.A. Reddick, Lowcountry Punch

Because I am an honest person I’m going to start this review by admitting the following two facts: 1) I NEED more T.A. Reddick and 2) I think I actually have a bit of a crush on T.A. Reddick. Okay I did lie, I have a huge crush on him. From the very first chapter I felt like he was sitting in my living room, in all his rugged handsomeness, telling me this story. Boo Walker has created a exciting, action packed novel that has me wanting to re-read it right now!

DEA Agent T.A. Reddick seems to have the worst luck. All in one day he looses the love of his life and shoots his best friend in a drug bust. Not to mention it is Christmas eve and his best bud was also a cop. Thinking he needs a change of scenery, he heads to Charleston, where he lives next door to the ex’s parents. After witnessing a mother shot in a bank and her little child taken by a junkie, T.A. sets into motion a chain of events that will all come back to haunt him. Enter said worst luck… again. With something to prove, T.A. takes on what could possibly be one of the biggest drug busts of his career. Who knew there actually was truth in the lyrics “It’s a small world after all…”

A new woman who quickly steals his heart, old family money, cocaine, a Hollywood starlett, and old love, and a hurricane round out this epic tale. Awesome, just – plain – awesome! Lowcountry Punch by Boo Walker is not only worth your money but also every dime you spent to purchase this novel. I hope to see more out of Boo very soon, and more novels featuring Agent T.A. Reddick!

TURNING POINT by Melissa Luznicky Garrett

The Back Cover

Convinced a fresh start is all she needs to escape the problems at home, seventeen-year-old Jenna Lyons runs away in the middle of the night. But when her car breaks down on the outskirts of La Grange, Missouri, population less than a thousand, she gets sucked into the small town, and one family in particular. Jenna discovers there’s a liar in La Grange, and he’s deceived everyone. Now she must decide whether to run away from the truth, or blow his secret wide open.

My Thoughts

I zipped right through Turning Point. Hands down one of the best reads I have gotten my hands on this year. I couldn’t wait to start reading. I was also intrigued because the town of LaGrange, where Jenna breaks down at is not far from me.

Now that high school is over, Jenna wants an adventure. Her childhood has not been an easy one, what with an alcoholic mother and her BFF’s father showing a little too much affection to her. When her car breaks down outside a small town in Missouri Phil, a good Samaritan who is also the church janitor, comes to her rescue, offering to go to the local garage and get a tow truck and also give her a lift. When she goes back to his house to wait for her car to be fixed, the rest of the family seem a little off. Especially when Phil keeps calling her by the wrong name, and has a complete freak out over a Scrabble game. The family members seem to be on a tight leash and no matter how many times Jenna is told to stay out of it and leave ASAP, she just can’t let it go. Dark secrets are being kept but Jenna’s persistence turns out to be the shining light at the end of the tunnel.

Melissa does a great job of drawing you in, holding you there until the very last page. A gripping tale of teenage freedom, anger, hurt, and hope. Pick this one up and jump right in. You will not be disappointed. Recommended for older teens and adults due to some more adult scenes. I look forward to reading more from this new author!
